Improving user experience for Taikoza learners

Taikoza is a community-driven social drum group based in Wellington, run by passionate volunteers. The group identified a need for its members to improve their skills and preparedness for performances. In response, we developed a tablet-friendly website that supports self-directed learning by providing curated educational content, video demonstrations of synchronised drum techniques, basic music theory lessons, and a member-managed system for collaboration.

Problem
Research reveals that members of different ages with different learning styles and music background face challenges while learning Taiko during group lessons. How can we help them learn more effectively at their own pace and be more prepared for performances?

Epiphany
Through primary research, it became evident that members sought better alignment between teaching and learning, closer group connections, and more opportunities for self-directed learning. This insight led to the expansion of the existing website, introducing a dedicated member section with custom-curated learning and engagement resources tailored to Taikoza members.

Process
I gathered and organised relevant content, developed a user-friendly interface, and structured the user interactions.

Initially, low-fidelity prototypes (sketches) were created to facilitate rapid feedback on the navigation structure, content organisation, and naming conventions.

Based on this feedback, a high-fidelity prototype was created using Figma. Usability tests were conducted with members navigating the site on tablets to complete various tasks.

Insights from these tests informed improvements in content, navigation, design, and interaction, which were incorporated into the final design.

Outcome
The revised website improved learning engagement by providing accessible, self-paced learning materials, fostering a sense of community, and supporting better performance preparation. Further iterations were proposed based on user feedback to continue refining the user experience.
